Dr. Nick Tovar is a distinguished Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon known for his exceptional expertise in integrating biomaterials into clinical practice. With advanced surgical training and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Tovar stands out among a select group of surgeons worldwide who possess both technical skills and a profound scientific understanding of how biomaterials interact with human tissue to facilitate healing. This unique combination allows him to develop innovative, personalized treatment plans that marry surgical precision with cutting-edge biomaterials.
Dr. Tovar's academic journey began with a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, followed by a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University, where he specialized in Biomaterials and Biomechanics. His doctoral research focused on developing novel tissue-engineering approaches for healing both hard and soft tissues. Following this, Dr. Tovar completed post-doctoral research at NYU College of Dentistry’s Department of Biomaterials and Biomimetics, where he eventually served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor and directed the Material Analysis and Testing Laboratory. During his academic career, he authored over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and lectured globally.
After years in academia, Dr. Tovar’s love for learning lead him to transition into clinical practice, earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from New York University College of Dentistry. He completed a General Practice Residency at Bellevue Hospital Center and a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at NYU Langone-Bellevue Hospital Center. His academic rigor and surgical expertise have helped shape his approach in patient care ensuring that his patients benefit from cutting-edge surgical solutions backed by the latest scientific research, resulting in enhanced recovery and long-term success.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Tovar is passionate about running, martial arts, and history. He shares a deep connection with his three accomplished siblings, his 7 wonderful nieces and nephews and his loving parents, who recently celebrated 52 years of marriage.
